* * * After 27 years in practice in New Orleans, we have redecorated our office and given it a face lift. My wife, Linda, was responsible for this project and I have received so many compliments on the new look of the office, the lovely colors, the new carpeting, and even a fountain in our reception area. * * * |

One of the highlights of early 2007 was an invitation to speak at Grand Rounds at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. I am a graduate of the residency program at Baylor and it was, indeed, a special honor to be a requested speaker at my urologic alma mater. In the audience there were several of my professors that provided me with training over a quarter of a century ago. It was truly an exciting experience and I so enjoyed my visit back to my urologic roots.
We continue to implement new technology in the practice. We now do the no-needle, no-scalpel vasectomy. This procedure reduces the pain and discomfort of the procedure and reduces the post-procedure complications. The procedure can be done in the office and takes less than 15 minutes. Most men report no pain and no discomfort afterwards.
We also have a new method of treating the enlarged prostate gland or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). We use minimally invasive therapy consisting of microwaves that can reduce the symptoms of BPH such as getting up at night to urinate, going to the bathroom frequently, or having the feeling that the bladder is not empty. The procedure is accomplished in the office and takes about thirty minutes. Nearly all of the men report improvement in their urinary symptoms within 2-3 weeks after the procedure. The procedure is covered by Medicare and most other private insurers.
We have also been involved in conducting a drug study that uses low doses of the same medication that is used to treat erectile dysfunction or impotence for the treatment of BPH. Our practice is one of the twenty practices in the United States that has been selected to participate in this important and exciting study.
Certainly Katrina has continued to color our lives in New Orleans. The palate of colors has been mostly bright and vivid with occasional grays and dark brown. However, for the most part the future of our city, and especially our healthcare system, is improving. Finally, I am encouraged by the attitude and enthusiasm of the young people who have stayed or returned to help rebuild our city. My own daughter, Lauren, has returned to New Orleans and is working at Idea Village to help entrepreneurial businesses either get started or get back on their feet. Lauren has written about her love of the city and I would like to share her ten reasons why she plans to help rebuild our community.
