Spotlight on Dr. Baum
Disaster Planning book cover

These past six months have seen several very exciting changes in our practice. First, I'm excited to tell you that Jones-Bartlett has published my new book, Disaster Planning for the Clinical Practice. This book was written from my experience with Hurricane Katrina and how it impacted my practice. It includes advice I could give other colleagues so that they may avoid some of the problems that happened to my patients and me.

Since my practice had an electronic medical record program, I was able to maintain contact with my patients who had evacuated New Orleans and provide them with their medications, lab reports, and results of tests via E-mail and the Internet. Many patients moved to other cities and needed urologists, and I was able to provide them with electronic copies of their medical records and help them find medical care in their new surroundings. That was the good news from the storm. There were many other issues such as my employees, how to keep in touch with them, and how to send them their paychecks when I did not have access to a bank for eight weeks. We also had problems getting new medical equipment, as the equipment we had was badly damaged. There were also issues of insurance, hospital privileges, and getting supplies for the office that were difficult or impossible because of the conditions that prevailed in New Orleans after the storm.

Having had to endure so many of these problems, I decided to chronicle my experience and share the positives as well as the negatives with my fellow colleagues. I teamed up with John McDaniel, a colleague and friend and the president of Peak Performance Physicians, as a co-author, for he also had a wealth of experience with his clients who experienced the ravishes of the storm. We spent the past year writing the book. The book is now available on Amazon.com. This book focuses on some of the lessons learned by the healthcare profession from Hurricane Katrina.

Failure to prepare for a disaster can have devastating consequences on your healthcare practice, your physicians, and your patients. Man-made disasters, such as computer crashes, power outages, and loss of electronic data, can have as much of a destructive effect on your practice as natural disasters — and in fact are much more likely to occur. This book provides advice to other healthcare professionals and shows how to prepare for every conceivable disaster using the tools in this book!

Disaster Planning for the Clinical Practice discusses how to overcome both natural and man-made disasters, identifies the necessary procedures for restarting your practice after a disaster has occurred, and explains how to prepare a real disaster plan. Readers will find true-life case studies, questions you will need to answer, and dozens of templates and forms for implementing his or her disaster plan immediately and effectively. Protect your practice — large or small — by using this valuable and timely resource.

Next, I'm delighted to tell you that this summer we have three pre-med students, Ryan, Kia, and Whelan, working in the practice. All three are excellent students and are interested in pursuing a career in medicine. They are learning how to take a medical history, how to check insurance, and how to use some of the electronic technology that we have in our practice. Several of them are working on writing a paper that we hope will be published in a medical journal.

Additionally, we have several new drug studies and device studies that we are conducting in our office. Jennifer and Allison are in charge of these studies, which involve overactive bladder, benign enlargement of the prostate gland, and a compliance study, which reminds patients to take their medications and refill their prescriptions. If you are interested in participating in the study, please contact Allison or Jennifer.

We also have a new practice management system that will help coordinate the billing, scheduling, and patient electronic medical record into one seamless computer program. Although the software has a few "bugs" to work out, Leslie and Maria are doing a great job to implement the new program.

Finally, my oldest employee of nearly 27 years, Jackie Aucoin, had arthroscopic knee surgery and has made a great recovery and is back at work with only two weeks of rest and rehab. She's truly an incredible woman and all of the patients and the office staff are so delighted that she is well and back at work with her tireless energy and exuberant enthusiasm.

I hope you continue to enjoy our newly decorated office and the new technologies that we have added to our practice.
